A bulldozer pushes dirt forward. A trencher cuts downward \u2014 and the cutting chain pushes the machine backward<\/em>. The track drive must overcome this self-generated reaction force while maintaining a feed rate so constant that the trench bottom varies by less than 25 mm over a 500-metre pipeline run. The chain rotates at 1 to 3 m\/s, and each tooth shears a chip of soil or rock from the trench face.
